Madame President

Presidential campaign busses will roll again in 1999, as candidates crisscross the country to win our votes.  Even now state and national leaders are vying for position in the presidential sweepstakes.  Will someone be missing again, the same someone who has been missing throughout American history?   In this country, where slightly more than half of the adult population is female, will either of the major political parties nominate a woman for president?

As gender roles blur nationwide, nearly equal numbers of men and women are graduating from law, medical, and business schools.  Well over half of American women work outside the home.  The executive ranks of major corporations are swelling with top-notch women, as are the halls of local, state, and national government.  An increasing percentage of the nation's wealth belongs to  women, as they inherit or earn top dollars and outlive men.

So where are the women at the top?  As consensus builders who pay careful attention to detail, women have a knack for keeping organizations running smoothly.  So why not find a woman to run our country more smoothly?   We need a woman president to provide a shift in perspective and rearrange national priorities.  With the right woman as President:

  • No longer will the nation's women and children continue their frightening descent into poverty and underemployment.
  • No longer will rapists and spouse beaters go free with a slap on the wrist.
  • No longer will hunger of children be tolerated.
  • No longer will families be without healthcare.
  • Gun lobbyists can pack up and go home.

We can nominate a capable, intelligent, compassionate woman; remain loyal to her as she suffers the muckraking and mudslinging of closet skeleton rattlers (competitors can play dirty in any contest); and vote her in.  Nothing need prevent us from nominating, supporting, and electing a woman to the Presidency of the United States.
