The Snowflake Universe

The snowflake is a wonderful model for describing the universe. The dimensional patterns of space and time are similar to the patterns of a snowflake, and the chaos of the universe is like the infinite variety found on every little flake.

Throughout history great scientists and mathematicians, like Galileo, Newton, Copernicus, Einstein, Hubble and Hawking, have pondered the origins of the universe and the elements of matter - indeed, the origins of life itself.

John Kulick ponders these questions, too. Kulick, a University of Connecticut graduate of the engineering program, mathematician, outdoorsman and brilliant thinker, explores some of these age-old questions with you in a local cable access TV series called, "The Snowflake Universe."

"The Snowflake Universe" is produced for Nutmeg Television in Plainville every week on Tuesday evening at 8:00 pm, from May 1st to July 17th. (Each program in the series airs twice.) The show can be seen in Avon, Berlin, Bristol, Burlington, Canton, Farmington, New Britain, Plainville, Simsbury, Litchfield and Middletown. Kulick is seeking wider distribution for the program.

Questions about the nature of space, time, matter and the laws that govern it are the subjects of this TV series. The episodes explore topics in astrophysics, cosmology, chemistry, particle physics, quantum physics and mathematics. Kulick presents basic theories in understandable terms and brings them to life with great props and experiments.

Other topics included are:

  • The History of Measurement Gravity
  • Dark Matter
  • The Expansion of Space
  • Balance Between Centrifugal Force and Gravity
  • The Edge of Space
  • Role of Probability in Determining Basic Structure of Universe
  • Kulick's Theories
  • Viewer Questions
Kulick's theories about the nature of the expansion of space include the expansion of matter itself, made clearer by picturing the arms of a snowflake growing to the edge of space. To understand the structural relationships upon which our universe is constructed, we need to know the relationships between space and time that relate to the expansion of space.

"Everywhere we look," says Kulick, "all of space is expanding around us, no matter where we are. This means that everything and everyone is located at the center of the Universe. Critics may say that is impossible, because if I am here and can see another point over there, neither could be the center. But the difference between here and there disappears when one goes from here to there. The energy it takes to move the mass and the time it takes to actually move is the same as the perceived distance in the first place."

Kulick also discusses "dark matter" and "dark energy," refuting their existence in those terms.

Postulates of Kulick's theory:

  • The effect of gravity is a function of time
  • If nothing changed, there would be no measurement of time
  • Space changes: therefore, time exists
These three postulates are expressed in the formula:

dS/dt = T

where:

"dS" stands for "a little change in space"
"dT" stands for "a little change in time"
"T" stands for "Cosmic Time"

Therefore, the equation reads, "A little change in space, per a little change in time equals cosmic time." This equation forms the basis for Kulick's theory.

Kulick also discusses principles of measurement as related to the expansion of space, time and matter, providing several illustrations to clarify the above postulates. Velocity and acceleration will also be taken into account.

"For thousands of years," Kulick says, "our ancestors have looked to the sky and watched the heavenly bodies pass overhead each day. This perspective helped shape the nature of religious beliefs. If the entire universe revolves around us, then we are the center of the universe. Since we did not call ourselves into being; nor did we choose where and when to exist; we must, therefore, be the result of something greater than ourselves. If something greater than ourselves created us and located us in the center of everything, we become the crown of creation.

"When Copernicus published his theory in 1543 that the Earth, like other planets, revolves around the sun, man was no longer said to be at the center of the universe. At that time the divine connection to mankind became jeopardized and religion was thereafter pitted against science. The new discoveries of the science of cosmology now reaffirm some of the basic tenets of religion. The irony is amazing.

"All things are centrally located, every person, every planet, every star, every galaxy, every atom, every particle and the entire universe itself. To place everything that can possibly exist in one central place defies even the remote possibility of things being an accident. Sure you could hit the bulls-eye once in awhile, but not all of the time, for billions and billions of times, each and every time, for all time."

Kulick is eager to present his theory to the American Astronomical Society. Sponsorship inquiries, questions and comments may be directed to John Kulick.
