Education Q&A Beth Bruno
by Beth Bruno 09/02/97

Our child is falling behind. What should we do?

Q: At a parent-teacher conference we learn that our child is falling behind academically. What should we do to help?

A: Learn as much about the teacher's concerns as you can; then discuss the conference with your child. Even young children can contribute ideas for solutions and will work harder to implement plans they have helped create.

  • Monitor homework.
  • Teach effective study skills.
  • Recognize and praise improvement.
  • Maintain regular communication with the teacher.
  • Be sure your child eats nourishing meals and gets enough sleep.
  • Set an example as an avid learner yourself.

Learning is a lifelong journey for you and your children. Take appealing detours along the way and enjoy the trip.
