Is it OK to volunteer? Q: I have a BA in English Literature from a university in Japan. I have been volunteering at my children's computer lab since last fall. Although I am still working on improving my English, is it all right to do such a volunteer work at a public school? I admit that sometimes I have to ask the lab teacher to assist the child and me at the same time, since I am not familiar with the Macintosh computer. A: Your written English is better than that of many native speakers. Therefore, I'm guessing that you have little trouble understanding student questions or making your answers understood. We're all learning about computers; teachers, students and parents alike. In fact, the students often know more about computers than we do. I applaud your efforts to learn more and your willingness to ask questions when you need guidance. I think your supervising teacher probably appreciates it, too. Perhaps it will help allay your anxieties if you discuss your concerns with the computer lab teacher. It's important for students to witness adults engaged in collaboration and new learning. It's even more exciting when the students can be the teachers occasionally, sharing their facility with computers as well as their knowledge of English. Your curiosity and humility, coupled with your obvious intelligence, provide a wonderful role model for the students. Please send questions or comments to bbruno@snet.net.
