I am 14. How can I help slow learners? Q: I am a 14 year old girl who loves children. It bothers me when people make fun of slow learners and treat them disrespectfully. I know I am a child myself, but I want to help them out. Is there a way I can get involved with children like this? A: Your desire to help others is commendable. If, however, you decide to pursue your interest in helping younger students with learning, be sure you also ask for training and supervision from a teacher, your parent(s) or other qualified adult. Many schools create opportunities for older children to help younger ones, either during study halls or after school. Start by expressing your interest to a favorite teacher or the school principal, who can guide you from there. A number of middle schools and high schools in Connecticut offer peer mediation training to students who wish to learn how to help peers resolve disputes or join discussion groups. Check out the following Internet sites for information about peer mediation, peer tutoring and cooperative learning:

Your friends may have other suggestions and also wish to join you. Please send questions or comments to bbruno@snet.net. Previous columns are available. | |||||||
