Mom (or Dad), We're Bored!
Q: Our three boys, ages 6, 7 and 11, could hardly wait for school to let out. But now that summer's half over, all I hear is "Mom (or Dad), we're bored!" Without spending a fortune, what will both amuse them and keep them learning? I don't want them to just veg out in front of the tube!
A: Get together around a big piece of poster board, draw a grid with enough squares to represent every day from now until school starts and map out the rest of your summer!
Just a few activities kids love that cost little and generate lots of creativity and fun are:
- - plant a fruit/vegetable garden
- - organize a neighborhood barbecue complete with games and
homemade prizes
- - write stories or keep a journal
- draw, paint, use sidewalk chalks
- build a tree fort
- work for parents or neighbors for extra money
- make weekly trips to the library where kids can take out
books, rent videos, check out books on tape, listen to
stories, sign up for craft classes (usually at nominal cost) andlearn computer skills
- - play indoor and outdoor games
- - take nature walks. Be sure to carry a few plastic specimen bags for collecting treasures along the way
- - make music
- - get together with friends. Be sure you have plenty of craft supplies, bikes, sports equipment and food on hand. The kids will take it from there.
- - read stories together every night. If your children like to ham it up, don makeshift costumes and act them out
- - find a place to swim. Most kids love the water and can spend entertaining themselves there.
- - be sure to come up with lots of activities done together as a family. These are times your children will never forget.
