The results of our weather
survey brought to mind one of the better-known bon mots of one of Connecticut's
more famous one-time residents, Mark Twain: "Everybody talks about
the weather, but nobody does anything about it." We received more than
12,000 votes in more than a week, and more than 100 emails to the web editor.
We thought the proposal to build a stadium in Hartford for the New England
Patriots was controversial. The subject of snow generated more heat.
The final results were:
Q: I like winter in Connecticut best when:
- There's lots of snow - 7,610 (61.6%)
- There's no snow - 2,494 (20.2%)
- When I'm vacationing in Florida - 2,233 (18.0%)
Several writers pointed out, quite accurately, that we offered no real
compromise between lots of snow and no snow. We figured that most people
lean one way or another, and didn't want to leave an easy, wishy-washy
choice. These surveys are for fun. We're glad so many of our subscribers
enjoyed this one, as we wait to see if we'll get any real snow this winter.
Here's a sampling of your opinions:
"Winter without snow is like a canvas painted gray. Snow creates
stimuluating colors because it reflects light. Snow sparkles like diamonds
when the sun shines. On a clear day, the skies cast beautiful hues of
blue onto the snow, making one feel the sky is above and beneathe you.
At night, it reflects the moonlight, casting intricate patterns of tree
shadows on the ground. Snow covers the garbage along the roadside making
everything look so clean. Without a snowy winter, Connecticut would be
colorless, bland and gray." G.T.
"I am responsible for moving the snow off the roads. Did you know
that six inches of snow means that for every mile of road over 2,500 cubic
yards of snow must be plowed?" G.K.
"Those people who said a lot of snow should have their heads examined." T.S.
"The reason eveyone wants snow is because no one wants to go to
school." D.B.
"I wish that you had a category for something in between no snow
and lots of it. I spent two hours this afternoon shoveling lots of slushy
ice that had become more like cement than ice crystals because the temperature
had fallen. This is not the kind of "snowstorm" your survey makes allowances
for! Florida may be lovely but you don't get that same feeling of satisfaction
and the reward of a well deserved steaming cup of hot cocoa after being
in the crisp Connecticut air shoveling the driveway and sidewalk. For
all of the sore muscles that I now have and the grumbling that I have
done, I wouldn't trade places with any of Mickey's friends. (Except perhaps
Michael Eisner!)" B.D.
"I cannot believe that there are so many idiots in Connectict who
like snow that much. I would prefer to have it balmy and in the 70's.
I plan on going somewhere else as soon as my husband retires. The fact
that the governer of this state has made the decision to build a stadium
for the Patriots inforces our decision to relocate. I wish that we had
had the opportunity to vote on this matter." G.K.
"I have to work out of state. Its no fun to have to travel across
the state in snow! But, when I do, Ct. seems to have the roads more clearer
than any other state I have had to travel!" O.B.
"Your Connecticut inquiry is very right on. I recently moved back
from CA, Santa Barbara, and the weather has been killing me. West coast
withdrawals big time. Anyway, thanks for reminding me of how cool the
snow is. I totally dig it. Take it easy." B.
"As the saying goes: If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.
Therefore it stands to reason, if you can't stand the snow, get out of
New England!" R.A.
"There should have been a 4th choice. Just enough snow to make it
pretty, but not dangerous. I like some snow - not alot, not none at all." J.L.
"After spending eight years in the southern California desert sweating
out 120-degree summers and 60-degree winters, I returned to my home state
of Connecticut where I eagerly awaited the winter beauty of snow! Somehow
Christmas lights on palm trees didn't seem to enhance the beauty of Christmas
with a blanket of snow. Now all we need to do is get some! For the past
eight years I haven't seen enough snow: however, there has been an abundance
of rain! Is Mother Nature playing games with us?" J.K.
"I'm a high school student who likes winter when it causes a snow
day the day a major philosophy or Shakespeare paper is due!" S.V.
"I happened to love snow. I find sledding with my children and
making snowmen and woman with them a good bonding experience." L.D.
