Connecticut awaits the return of the National Basketball Association with something less than fervid anticipation, according to our entirely unscientific SNET Internet weekly survey. This is college basketball territory, and the University of Connecticut hoop teams, men's and women's, apparently provide the action we really care about.

Less than 6 percent of respondents are glad the N.B.A. is back, while about 11 percent will at least miss Michael Jordan. Combined, nearly 40 percent counted themselves as "wildly indifferent" or "disgusted," and much of the email to the web editor discussed how difficult it was to empathize with the wealthy elite of pro basketball, players and owners alike.

About 44 percent indicated their preference for following UConn basketball.

The final results were:

Q: How do you feel about the return of pro basketball after the N.B.A. settlement?

  • I'm glad it's back:- 628 (5.5%)
  • I'm disgusted with it - 2,210 (19.5%)
  • I'm wildly indifferent - 2,228 (19.6%)
  • I'll miss Michael Jordan - 1,277(11.2%)
  • Who cares, we have UConn! - 4,979 (43.9%)

Here are your comments: "Basically ... who cares. Pro basketball is basically BOR-RING. I like the Knicks ... hope they win when I listen to a "Sports Update," and hope a lot at playoff time, but I wouldn't walk across the street to watch pro basketball for free. But I regularly PAY to watch high school sports -- all of 'em, including basketball. I cover a number of them as a physician -on-the-field or physician-on-the-ice. I LOVE Giants football, LOVE March Madness (the wife gets upset when we go that week to St Martin, because all I want to do is watch the college hoops, and though I don't have cable, watch the Yankees whenever I can. I could care less about the NBA before, and MUCH LESS now ... hope the Knicks win ... but that's it. The PLAYERS were stupid." J.F.

"This is just as ridiculous as the baseball strike was years back. These are highly overpaid professional sport players. There are people who put their live on the line every day they report to work and don't receive 1/8th of what these people receive (in salaries) and they are only playing sports. I keep watching the college level sports (basketball and football) because their HEART is in the game, not their pocketbooks!" M.R.

"Professional basketball is for the bucks and the birds. Only amateur basketball is inviting!" A.C.

"There is no excitement in the NBA. The season is too long. The playoffs are too long. The salaries are too high. The ticket prices are too high. The players are too arrogant. I'd rather watch college or high school games where the players are playing their hearts out and enjoying the game." P.G.D.

"I'd rather see something more than someone hanging on a basket when he's 6' '7" or more and his reach is 9' something. He could reach the rim on his toes! So I say let them strike, who cares." G.L.

"The players and owners are greedy. I don't give a damn about the NBA. Money is the rule of all evil and the players are not god." S.J.

"You missed an option on your "How do you feel about the return of pro basketball after the N.B.A. settlement?" question. My real opinion is that I never watched it and think pro sports are a waste of time and money. You should have given us the option "pro what?" F.G.

"Michael Jordan has been a class act. What a great role model for kids! Sunday's paper had a sports editorial which said Michael was selfish. What a fool that man was. Michael will be missed and has been a pleasure to watch. He wants to spend time with his children -- good for him. The only selfish person was that sports writer. God bless you Michael. My husband and I also love UConn, men and women, even when they lose. People say, "Who needs the NBA?" The college basketball players do. Where are these athletes going to go after college, Europe? Come on people, smarten up. As for people who criticize Michael for his role with Nike: Guess what? This country was built on sweat shops. It may not be a great way to live, but at least they have jobs. What will these people who work in these sweat shops do if they no longer have jobs ... Americans pay a high price for Nike's as you know. If they went up much higher, we wouldn't buy them and these people would be out of work. Granted the higher-ups in the Nike industry are making a fortune, but they won't give that up. Reality check. People who say they won't work for those low wage jobs, have never been hungry enough. Been there." A.W.

"I'm glad the NBA is back! But I think that all this trading for money thing is so stupid. You play basketball because you like to, not because the industry is paying you millions of dollars. It is really stupid. I, however, am a very good example towards kids even though I am a kid because I will take the teaching and yelling of the coaches and learn how to play a defense or offense that I did not know how to play before. But if you look towards NBA players who are only playing for the money, what will you learn? That's it's good to make people pay you to play? Come on. It's such a simple question to answer. And that is why my little cousins would look up to someone like me." N.M.

"The second worst piece of news that I received this winter as far as sports was concerned was the news that the NBA labor dispute was settled. (No. 1 was the loss of the Blizzard.) It was my heart's desire to see not only the season, but the entire league cancelled and replaced by a league that actually plays basketball!" D.C.

"I watched the N.B.A. a lot as they played during this past season but during the lockout I really didn't miss it that much because I was still able to watch the UConn games on T.V. But as far as this goes, I think this is really ridiculous that the N.B.A. players were on strike for all this time because of the demand of money I really think that the players are getting paid enough dough as it is. There is no need for the demand in increse in pay." A.G.

"I am surprised that only 12 percent miss Michael Jordan. It will make a huge difference in basketball. I think we should be making a bigger fuss on him leaving. Bigger than the Y2K bug." M.O.

"The players tried to make it an issue over salaries for lesser paid players but they were only looking to prevent a hard cap on superstar player salaries. I think the N.B.A. players will find the public is very unforgiving to their greed." S.E.

"I am a avid auto race fan. My No. 2 sport was the N.B.A., but no longer. The drivers in NASCAR are out there putting there life on the line for about 1/10th the money. You will never see any race driver on strike! Go UCONN!" R.T.E.

"Even though we have the undefeated UConn, we still need the dunks from the pros. And I will miss Michael Jordan and I will still root for the Bulls." S.M.

"UCONN ... It should be called Connecticut Basketball College. Calhoun is a great coach. But it's all about taxpayer money. What percentage of these guys are from Connecticut, anyway? If they name another building in Storrs after Chris Dodd, I might leave Connecticut and take my business with me." A.C.

"It is about time for all major league sports to have a reality check. Paying someone 14 million dollars to throw a ball through a basket is stupid. I like sports but the salaries are way out of line." M.H.

"Who cares that the N.B.A. is back? I prefer college basketball anyway! The only time I watch for more than a few minutes is the NBA finals. I did not miss them while they were gone and I won't watch the games that the out-of-condition players will be playing when they return!" W.V.

"I think basketball is overrated and the players make way too much money. It kills me to think of how much our firemen, police officers and teachers get paid in comparison to the Basketball football, and baseball players. What are we saying to our children when we'll pay more to someone who throws a ball, than we will to someone who teaches our children or to the men and woman who put their life on the line every day to save our lifes?" B.B.

"College basketball is the real deal. Thank goodness for the UCONN women and men. We don't watch any pro basketball and can't understand who would want to watch primping, complaining, overpaid prima donnas play an offense-only game. BOOOORRRRING. Perhaps the strike will have the added bonus raising the ratings for college basketball games, both men's and women's." R.

"The United States just wasn't the same without basketball. However, I think some of the players brought that whole strike thing a little to far. Maybe if they cut some of those 11-million-dollar stars back, there would be more money for the 50-thousand-dollar players and less problems. Besides, the ones worth $11-million-plus could always be in a commercial or something to make up for the lost million dollars. Its not like they can't live without the money anyway. Why don't they only buy one Porsche?" M.S.

"I wanted to fill out both "I'm disgusted" and "Who cares, we have UConn," but I decided (to go with) with "I'm disgusted." I have been saying this for a long time: "Pro sports figures are getting paid WAY too much for what they do," and I'm talking about all sports. I feel the people should boycott sports. I mean, if these players had their pay cut from $5 million or $10 million ... to a top pay of 1 millio,n I guarantee you they would all play the sport for that money. After all they are PLAYING the sport. I really can't see them making that much money in doing something that is really play and not work and also while doing something they love. Plus, if they were paid what they are really worth the normal Joe Worker could afford to bring his family of four to a game. Nowadays, thanks to the players' greed, the average guy can't bring a family to see a game. I feel that is pitiful." S.M.C.
