More than 11,000 votes were tallied in our survey on Super Bowl XXXIII.
Upwards of 60 percent of respondents said they're going to watch at least
part of the spectacle, while 37 percent indicated their profound disinterest -- and sometimes, their disgust with the majority.
The simplest answer -- the answer of a fan -- was the most popular. Just
under 40 percent said they will watch because they love the game. If our email box
is any indication, there are more Broncos boosters than Falcon fans in
Connecticut.
About 10 percent said they'd watch for the rollout of great
commercials on Super Bowl Sunday, this year costing a cool $1.6 million per 30 seconds of air. Look for Hartford Financial's half-minute,
featuring a kangaroo, in the third quarter.
Several readers pointed out that we failed to include what probably would
have been a popular answer: "I'll watch because I have money on the
game." The readers are right -- we simply didn't think of the gambling/football
pool angle when we made up the question, and wish we had. The results
would probably have been more interesting..
The final results were:
Q: The Super Bowl. Will you watch, and why?
- Yes, I love football - 4,496 (39.5%)
- Yes, everyone else does - 971 (8.5%)
- No, I don't care - 4,256 (37.4%)
- Yes, for the great ads - 1,123 (9.9%)
- I'll watch the halftime show - 517 (4.5%)
Here are your comments:
"I love football,
and I think the Broncos are the greatest team in the world. Ihope they
win it all, go Broncos!" C.L.
"The thing about the
Super Bowl is that even if you don't want to watch it, you pretty much
have to because there is absolutely nothing else on TV." J.D.R.
"I do not like football
the sport, but I do love the good looking men who play it. I think it
is boring, like ice-skating ... So I'd rather be shopping at the local
mall spending ready cash than watching plain 'ol football!" L.S.
"You didn't give us
the option: 'Yes, because my husband controls the remote.' :)" B.P.
" I'll watch the Super
Bowl because I love football but I hate the media blitz that goes with
it and all NFL games. I miss the days when you could see the huddle and
everything that was going on on the field instead of a commercial. I wish
corporate America would leave the game(s) alone, maybe a half hour of
commercials before and after the event ( this goes for ALL sports events
for that matter.)" P.O.
"I will watch the
Super Bowl, if for no other reason than I LOVE the Denver Broncos. I have
been a fan for over 16 years. I cried when John Elway realized that they
had won last year, and I want to experience the same emotions again this
year!" S.A.
"I won't watch primarily
because its on the new 'CARTOON NETWORK'.............FOX!" J.P.
"The number one reason
to watch the Super Bowl is ... to see if I won the pool!" T.L.
"It is idiotic to
stare at a screen to watch these millionaires dance around a field while
they make more millions. The only losers are we starers: The Winners are:
the millionaire players, the millionaire coaches, the millionaire stadium
owners, the billionaire owners, the billionaire advertisers and all the
other modern-day robber barons. They are interested in the "fans" only
because without them there would be no television and no millions to spread
around. Otherwise, they could care less about us. What fools we watchers
be!" A. and P. M.
"They put it on Sunday
in January because they know there isn't much else to do. I wonder how
many people would watch it if it were on Saturday night in July!"
T.M.
