Casinos

The subject of gambling pushed some hot buttons for SNET Internet subscribers who participated in our utterly unscientific survey on which are the best casinos. The locals fared well, with Foxwoods polling 22.9 percent and the Mohegan Sun picking up the support of 16.5 percent of the more than 8,000 "votes."

Las Vegas fell right in between, at 18.8 percent, with Atlantic City casinos registering a paltry 3.7 percent.

The largest vote went to "who cares?" with 29.8 percent, while 8 percent expressed the belief that gambling should be illegal.

The final results were:

Q: What are the best casinos?

  • Foxwoods is the best: - 1,891 (22.9%)
  • Mohegan Sun is No. 1 - 1,364 (16.5%)
  • Atlantic City - 301 (3.7%)
  • Nothing beats Las Vegas - 1,553 (18.8%)
  • I don't gamble, who cares? - 2,457 (29.8%)
  • Gambling should be illegal - 659 (8.0%)

Here are your comments:

"The casinos around here don't measure up to those elsewhere in the world, Monte Carlo and Montreal just to name two." R.J.

My father taught my brothers and I never to gamble more than you can afford to lose. "It seems that there are a great deal of people who can afford to lose a great deal of money. I dont know whether to envy them or pity them." G.W.

"I feel strongly Foxwoods has a definite advantage over the Mohegan Sun simply because they have "no smoking" casino rooms instead of the Sun's no smoking area (like the smoke knows where to stop.) There's nothing worse than getting stuck next to a cigar smoker three feet from you when you hate smoke from even cigarettes." J.D.

"Vegas is the best -- I won for a week straight, started with $800 and came home with $7,000. If you get up $1,000 at Foxwood or Mohegan Sun you never get your next jackpot like you do in Vegas." J.D.

"Regarding your survey on the best casino, it's beyond me why the 32% who responded, "I don't gamble, who cares?" would even bother to answer the poll. They dont gamble, they've probably never been to a casino, so how could they have an opinion as to which is the best casino? The ignorance of evidently 32% of the population absolutely amazes me." M.C.
Editor's Note: People just like surveys, we guess. And some people feel strongly about their apathy to some of our questions. ;-)

I voted for Foxwoods. However, I'm not a gambler at all. I love the atmosphere, shopping, accommodations for overnight and the restaurants. I don't think a casino has to be connected to gambling only. People who don't gamble should vote anyway." A.B.

"Gambling casinos should be made to pay for treatment of gambling addiction just as the tobacco industry is made to pay." J.V.

"Although we frequent the two local casinos, their is little chance of winning. Vegas odds are much better, particularly with the slots. This is fact. The casinos in vegas publish their chances. The casinos in Connecticut would lose a lot of their business if they did this. Anybody that does serious gambling should invest in the trip to Las Vegas and save. Calling ahead will generally get you a room for half price. Try to avoid weekends and conventions, as the rooms are usually reserved in many of the decent hotels. I, would encourage anyone to shy away from local casinos." J.H.

"The "best casino" is a personal success question. Any avid gambler is going to like the casino where his/her luck is the best. I don't like the question regarding whether it should be legal or not. Visiting a casino is a form of recreation just as golf, skiing or skin diving is. We wouldn't suggest making those activities illegal, would we?" J.F.

"It is encouraging that such a high percentage registered "Who cares?" Gambling is as destructive as any narcotic." K.C.

"I am from Reno, Nevada, but I lived in Las Vegas for a long time. Las Vagas is "da bomb." Foxwoods is like a lttle fair while Las Vegas is like Disney World." D.S.

"Las Vegas has more to offer of course but because of the distance,we prefer Connecticut. They need to copy the "Wheel of Fortune" wheels as they are in Las Vegas. These Wheel of Fortune machines in Connecticut do not pay well at all." M.D.

"The very best casino is the casino that returns to its patrons the greatest comps. THAT is in my estimate the SANDS in Atlantic City. Please tell casino owners to stop trying to buy friends with community gifts. Take care of your customers, never mind the non-gamblers. They will still badmouth casinos." J.F.

"As a boy I remember listening to a call in radio show that aired during the inception of the first Connecticut lottery game. The woman who was speaking went on at length about how, "This was the beginning of a great evil that would eventually overrun the state." Most listeners laughed her off as an alarmist, after all how was a tiny 50 cent ticket for a lottery whose grand prize rarely was for anything more than an AMC Pacer going to do any long-term harm? Well, here we are nearly 25 years later and everything that old woman warned about has come to pass. No longer are the monies from the lottery going towards education. And the proliferation of instant games and grand lotto and powerball jackpots has turned it into nothing more than a "poor-man's tax." There is not one but two major casinos in the state, and sure to be more. We have opened Pandora's Box. Soon the state lottery will be dwarfed by these casino jackpots and the state will have to find another source of revenue. Yes, its all in fun. And great occasional fun it can be. But, like a drug, gambling does not just affect the gambler, it affects his family, friends, work-mates, neighbors, and anyone who comes in contact with him. Years ago an old woman tried to warn us of an impending catastrophe, we were too busy having a good time to listen. By now she has probably long since passed away but, it would be interesting to hear her opinion of all of this now." J.B.

"Wouldn't it be something if people learned to enjoy their surroundings withOUT shopping malls, entertainment parks and casinos? Ever heard of hiking ... walking ... reading ... playing a sport ... enjoying the land without structures on it? Nah ... ain't gonna happen. Self-indulgence and what's in it for me is "in" these days." B.C.M.

"I think that Foxwoods is great, but toooooo big and way too crowded. Atlantic City is just too far away. Las Vegas, haven't been yet. Mohegan Sun, friendlier atmosphere, not too big, not too small. Seems like Foxwoods is just trying to make money, thats it. Mohegan seems to make you feel more welcome, but still takes the money." B.W.

They should pass law making it illegal in Connecticut -- many families suffer from a member's (gambling) losses. But lawmakers are greedy, they see the dollar signs and how fast they can spend it." J.L.

"Mohegan beats Foxwoods hands down in my book! Add one more fan to the Mohegan list!" R.B.

"Anybody who wins at any casino will probably say that one is good. For the many more losers and people with gambling problems, there should be a separate space for additional comments. I'm the one, who for the greater part, has made donations to the Indians in the few times that I have gone. I hate going to both (Connecticut) casinos and it makes me sick to see people taking turns gambling while their kids sleep in strollers in the later hours of the night. Sure they're beautiful places. They are like that because of the many losers who go there and spend money they can't afford to lose! The lure of winning money is like a stinking vaccuum sucking people in, of all ages. In casino newsletters they show a few people who win money, but certainly don't care about the losers. I guess the casinos are good revenue for this area. And I will probably return to them again sometime and make furthur donations to those poor, abused Indians. Do you know of any single members of those tribes who are looking for a hard-working man? I hear their yearly salaries are quite good. But I'll bet you're glad you asked my opinion." E.D.

"I dont understand why you have to be 21 to gamble but you can purchase lottery tickets at age 18. 21 is not a reasonable gambling age. There is no reason why an 18-year-old is incapable of gambling and I think the age should be lowered." P.M.
