Final Four

They had 'em all the way, at least according to respondents to the SNET Internet survey on which team would be left standing at the end of March Madness.

UConn 77. Duke 74. What more do we have to say? It's a good thing there aren't names attached to the comments of the nay-sayers below; about 20 percent thought the Huskies fans were voting with their hearts and not their heads, and they'd be in for some serious ribbing.

Ohio State and Michigan State? They were barely on the radar to start with. Interestingly enough, both picked up a handful of votes after losing in the semifinals.

About 9 percent of respondents were heartily sick of the whole thing.

The final results were:

Q: Which men's Final Four team will go all the way?

  • UConn, of course! - 7,486 (68.3%)
  • It's Duke's year - 2,159 (19.8%)
  • Ohio State - 145 (1.3%)
  • Michigan State - 168 (1.5%)
  • I'm sick of March Madness - 978 (8.9%)

Here's what SNET Internet subscribers had to say leading up to The Game:

"They are going to have a tough chance beating Duke but I think they will pull it off. GO UCONN!" T.L.

"UConn barely got past Gonzaga, now they're supposed to get by OSU and then Duke? Never." A.C.

"Those players should be in school LEARNING. That is the intention of school, not learning how to be in the NBA. Why attend a good school if you are not going to participate in the academics of that school? If they break a leg they won't even have a complete education to stand on. They will only know how to be a "basketball star."" V.R.

"I'm sick of March Madness.
I'm sick of March Madness.
Not everyone in the world cares about sports.
And shouldn't these kids be busy taking classes and studying?
I got stuck living in a jock dorm at UCONN, and I overheard some jocks complaining that their coach couldn't find anyone to take their [the players] tests for them, and that they would probably have to take their own tests.
What the heck was I doing? I worked my butt off, and these guys just coast through school (except when they have to take their own tests, boo-hoo!)
Also, at this time of year, I can't talk to any of the guys in my neighborhood without the conversation turning to March Madness.
C'mon, guys, get a life!
I'm sick of March Madness.
I'm sick of March Madness.
Every year around October I begin to dread March Madness.
Some people start too soon, and won't give it a rest.
I am SO sick of March Madness.
I am SO sick of March Madness.
The lead story on the news today was - guess what?
Does that crap mean anything? There are much more important stories out there.
I am sick to death of March Madness.
I am sick to death of March Madness." K. & L.T.
Editor's Note: Come on, don't hold back ... ;-)

"If wishes do come true, then it is time for UCONN men to ride the Final Four train to victory! Then we can boast that we've had National Champions for both of our great basketball teams. By the by, I am not a big basketball fan. ... I refuse to watch any game in which UCONN is not a player and do not watch the pros. The only exception might be when TEAMUSA plays in the Olympics. I will cheer UCONN on this weekend. Good Luck! Play hard, play well and keep healthy!" M.B.

"I know UCONN will go all the way this year! They have a fantastic all around team. Richard Hamilton and Kevin Freeman will bring the pack the whole nine yards. You have to agree with me on this. UCONN is my favorite team and they have what it takes." M.A.

"I don't understand what is so good about basketball. All you do is dribble and shoot and they always make it. At my school that is all they talk about and I hate it!!!! I mean I'm happy for UConn and stuff but enough is enough. There are lots of better sports out there." K.R.

"I believe that the '99 Duke team is the best college basketball team in a while. Not only did they have less losses, more ranked opponents, a higher margin of victory and ranked number one for the season, but all of their stats are better. Trajon Langdon is the best college basketball player today, and to back him up you have Brand, Battier, Avery, and Coach K. They will destroy UConn." M.H.

"Sometimes people vote with their hearts. They chose UConn. As a diehard University of Michigan fan and alumnus, I detest Ohio State most, followed by Michigan State. Of course is a perennial UM enemy, given their performances against the Blue. So UConn would be a heartfelt choice, especially in my own state. But it is Duke's year. The Celtics couldn't beat Duke!" R.G.

"Most people are picking UConn ... Only sports fans who can be objective should answer this question, not UConn fans who don't understand basketball. Get a clue!" E.F.

"I love and root for the UConn men and women's basketball teams, but to be realistic the Duke men's team is the best in the country. I will root for the men and I think they will meet Duke in the final, but Duke will win. It's been one helluva ride and the men should be proud of their season. GO HUSKIES!" P.H.

"How could I not root for the Huskies?!! As the regional manager of the UConn Co-op Bookstore at UConn Stamford, I have to say that the team's success has been more than wonderful for our sales. Final Four T-shirts have been flying out of the store, and it's fun to watch people's enthusiasm in anticipation of Saturday night. We are even taking phone orders from out-of-staters and shipping the T's UPS. We don't usually have Saturday hours, but we are opening from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. THIS Saturday!" P.W.

"I don't know what this poll is all about, but there is no way that UConn is going to beat the Blue devils. Duke has way too many weapons for UConn to handle. There is no one inside for UConn that will be able to stop Elton Brand. If any has watched a good number of UConn games they must have realized that Jake Voskell is horrible and forget about that scrub Edmund Saunders, cause he's a joke. GO DUKIES!" M.S.

"To the people who are sick of March Madness: Who cares?" D.D.
