Tax Time

Every year, TV news crews camp out at the Post Office on April 15, looking for last minute tax filers. But when do most people actually do their taxes?

Respondents to this week's SNET Internet survey mostly get them done early -- more than 60 percent finished their tax chores for the year before the survey started. About 18 percent were still working on their taxes and/or planning to file at the last minute, and under 4 percent were planning to seek an extension.

About 16 percent of respondents indicated that they're too young to have to worry about April 15.

This is the first week we've used a form for submitting comments about our survey. We've given respondents the option of using their real name, and including their email address if they so wish. This is not a requirement for publication. We continue to reserve the right to edit submissions for clarity or to not publish a comment.

The final results were:

Q: When do you file your income tax return?

  • Already done - 2,816 (61.7%)
  • I'm working on it - 294 (6.4%)
  • At the very last minute - 567 (12.4%)
  • I'll need an extension - 169 (3.7%)
  • I'm just a kid! - 714 (15.9%)

Here are your comments:

"Just like everyone else, I file early if getting my own money back .. at the last minute if paying. Although it is always painful. I guess i could find more time only if I were in prison for not paying at all." O.R., New Britain

"I've filed my taxes myself using tax preparation software for the past 3 years. This year I filed on February 3rd and had my Federal refund deposited in my checking account on Feb. 12th." O.D., Windsor

"I have all ready done with filing my income tax return. Because If I didn't I would keep on putting it off and then it would never get done, so I do it right away." J.M., Storrs

"I file as soon as the last W2 form comes in -- don't want Uncle Sam holding my money hostage any longer than possible." Sesran, Naugatuck

"I just don't see what takes people so long to do their taxes. I mean the government gives you a period of time to have it done, but some people need an extension. If they would get it done right away, they would have already gotten their return." S.B., Greenwich

"Every year I file my income tax return as soon as I have received all the necessary information. I do not like to fret about my return for several months before filing." T.S.K., Shelton
