Pop-Culture Icon

We knew when we put this survey up that the multiple-choice format couldn't possibly accommodate all the possibilities, which is why we encouraged folks to write in. We simply picked who we thought would have been the five top vote-getters in an open poll. We wanted to name figures from earlier in the century -- Louis Armstrong and Charlie Chaplin came to mind immediately, though no one wrote in Satchmo, and the Little Tramp received but one mention. But we were left with the conviction that it was the rise of mass media that has made possible a level of fame and ubiquity that makes pop icons of the modern era somehow bigger than those from bygone days.

At any rate, the list of those we passed over is long and meritorious, and we're glad you wrote in with your favorites.

The final results were:

Q: Who is the greatest pop culture icon of the century?

  • The Beatles - 2,178 (37.7%)
  • Sinatra - 655 (11.3%)
  • Marilyn Monroe - 291 (5.0%)
  • Madonna - 484 (8.4%)
  • Elvis - 1,612 (27.9%)
  • Other - 547 (9.5%)

Here are your comments, and other selections:

"The greatest pop-culture icon for me is: ABBA." Chris Puzinski, Torrington

"I think the Beatles are the best icon." W.Z., Guilford

"Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek." Debbie Bennett, Litchfield

"What is this? A list of the "Mighty Whiteys"? If I were a person of color, I would be insulted to the extreme. What you have here is basically a list of copy cats. And late-century copy cats at that. There is not an original performer in the bunch. What about Chuck Berry? Or Nat King Cole? How about Glen Miller? Count Basie?" W., Naugatuck

"WHY are the Beatles considered so great? They copied basic American Rock 'n' Roll to gain notoriety. Yes, later they wrote some good songs and some of them are classics, but musically they are simpletons. Compare them to Earth, Wind and Fire or Ray Charles or any of the great singers or groups of that era and they can't hold a musical candle to those artists. Teeny boppers made them because the teens of that era could not relate to r&b or other American Rock classics of the time. To me, the Beatles are LIGHTWEIGHTS who happened along at the right time. Give me Ray Charles ANYTIME! American soul, r&b and rock RULES!" T., Southport

"Betty Boop, Humphrey Bogart, Lassie, Superman, Emelia Earhart." Phil Stein, Fairfield

"What happened to ELTON JOHN?" G.C.C., Bethany

"Orson Welles is the pop culture icon of the century." W.F.M., New Britain

"My vote for most influential pop icon of the century is none other than the late great John Lennon." S.D., Beacon Falls.

"Everyone knows tha the greatest pop sensation is *NSync and none of the other choices made any sense becaue *NSync are the best ever and will always be!" Laser101, North Canaan

"I would have to say Elvis, but this would not be my personal choice. The question doesn't seem to be looking for a personal answer but more like an overall opinion. Looking at the way society acts for the Elvis subject ... I mean, you hear about Elvis being seen here and there and impersonated by this on and that one. It would be my opinion that looking at the world from a bird's eye view, it would be Elvis." Sesran, Naugatuck

"Marilyn Manson." Bob, Plainfield

"If Andy Warhol doesn't fit that bill, I don't know who could!" Bill, Rockville

"Nsync is da bomb, so is Eminem, Offspring, Monica, and Will Smith." Bonny Kent, East Hartford

"I think the greatest icon of all time is the Rolling Stones. They've been around and are still playing around for a lot longer than The Beatles ever could." Jeff Hall, Rocky Hill

"Greatest pop culture icon of the 20th century is just rock & roll music in general, PERIOD." J.W.D., Lyme

"I'm only 13, so I wasn't around for any of these other "pop culture icons." I think *N Sync is a huge icon for people my age (mostly girls anyway) and they should be mentioned in this survey." Katie, Wolcott

"Michael Jackson is the greatest pop icon of the century. He's the best. He is always on surveys like this. I'm very disappointed that he was not. Please he better now. Jamie, Forestville
Editor's Note: We thought about putting The Gloved One up there, as well, and you can certainly make a good case for including him. But we settled on just five choices.

"By far, the pop icon of the century is the one and only, "Sir" Elton John." For over 30 years he's written hit after hit, far surpassing the solo careers of John and Paul. He is close to being as popular today as he was in his heyday of the seventies, and still writes songs that hit the pop charts. As a matter of fact, he is the only artist to have a hit in the Top 40 for 31 years in a row, surpassing the great Elvis Presley in doing so. If this alone doesn't rank him as "THE POP ARTIST OF ALL TIME", I don't know what would. E.D., Meriden

"The greatest pop icon of this century is Mickey Mouse." Ken Tetreault, Plainfield

"I think that the greatest pop culture icon would have to be Elton John. His music is great and he is still alive and kicking it here in the 90s. And its also good to see that he has his own style and music ... because in the 90s ... that's what we are striving for. Individuality. Elton John is a great musician and I give him all my love." S.C., Huntington

The greatest icon is a respected singer, Selena Quintallia Perez. She is so wonderful, with a colorful imaginative style. Although she's dead, many people love and respect her." Carmen Justiano, New Britain

"I think the Backstreet Boys are icons of the century because they are a good clean-cut group." Michelle, Hamden

"Walt Disney is the greatest pop culture icon of the century!" Angela Bedore, Colchester

"The only reason there are more Beatles responses is the age group is more likely to be online, at least that's my guess. Everybody knows Elvis is King!" J.F. Connors, Marlborough

"It has to be Elvis ... why would we still have Elvis sightings years after his death? ... how could you use the expression "___ has left the building" or "Thank you, thank you very much" and know who they were referring to? How can you utter the syllables "Uh-HuH" in a deep voice and be considered sexy?...His mannerisms, sex appeal, hair style, sequenced outfits ... The funny thing is, I wouldn't consider myself a huge Elvis fan. But of all your pop icon choices, no one could ever forget Elvis. He has become a character in our national makeup." R.K.A., New Britain

"Charlie Chaplin." R.R.B., Brookfield

"Shame on you for not including Lauryn Hill in your list of selections for the "greatest pop culture icon of the century." Without a doubt, she should be and is the number one choice. Leslie Wright, Hartford

"Jerry Garcia." J.M., Essex

"What's the matter with John Wayne? He got those others beat by a hundred miles." Vaun, Noroton Heights

"I thought about this one. Madonna and the Beatles are obviously popular, but go in and out, even the "King" has a drought. Leaving Sinatra and Marilyn -- the Chairman was at least ALIVE, but the woman has been dead longer than she was living! AND she was on the cover of weekly magazines this month! You have to answer Marilyn." T.K., South Windham

"In my opinion, the top influence is Bob Dylan. There may be icons that come and go, but all of them, including the Beatles, must admit the influence Bob Dylan had and still holds." Peter Greene, Goshen

"I voted for the Beatles, but there are a few others that aren't on your list. Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Irving Berlin, to name a few." M.J., New London

"Elvis, like pro wrestling, may have had an effect on the lowest common denominator of musical intelligence, and the Beatles certainly had an effect on fickle adolescents, but anyone with any sense of the direction of music, films and public attitudes would have to admit that Sinatra outdid them all, and his effect on various areas of expressions in the performing arts will last long after Elvis' wiggle & his impersonators are gone." Chuck Emery, Forestville

"Jackie Robinson. I know that I am in a small group but I think Jackie made Browne versus the Board of Education more likely and was a more important individual in the changes in the middle of this century than most people today realize. Plus, he was one heck of a ballplayer." Bill Reich, New Haven

"Yes, without Elvis there would have been no Beatles. But The Beatles are the most influential musical group of this century. What they did in a short period of time was astounding." B.A., Manchester

"Barbie is by far the greatest, largest, most misunderstood, and most influential icon of the century." Donna C. Owens, New Britain

"Sinatra is first among the silver-haired. Next time, survey by age groups. The voice is dead. Long live his music." A.R.M., Killingly
