Baseball

There is perhaps no rivalry in Connecticut more historically one-sided than that between the fans of the Red Sox and the Yankees. The Yankees win pennants; the Red Sox mostly break hearts and lament the Curse of the Bambino.

Not surprisingly, nearly half of all respondents to our survey this week indicated that they think that this is again the Yankees' year, though nearly a quarter think the Sox can still win out. A smattering of Mets fans, jokesters ("Aren't they still on strike?!") and critics (Baseball is stupid") rounded out the responses.

The results:

Q: The baseball season is half over -- which local team will have the best year?

  • The Mets - 329 (8.6%)
  • The Yankees - 1,829 (47.5%)
  • The Red Sox - 912 (23.7%)
  • Aren't they on strike?! - 176 (4.6%)
  • Baseball is stupid - 602 (15.6%)

Your comments:

"Let's see ... the Red Sox blew the World Series in 1986, lost in 1975, and won their last in 1918, the final year Babe Ruth played with them before he left for the Yankees. All Red Sox fans keep these sobering thoughts deep in their subconscious, out of the light. As a Yankee fan, I'm more than happy to bring them to the forefront. Stuff your ballot boxes to get Nomar into the All Star game, rally around Pedro all you like. No matter. Come October, one way or another, the Sox are going down. Go Yanks!" R.C., No Town

"I have gained a much better appreciation for the game now that my six-year-old son is playing ... P.S. Not just because I'm his mom ... he's very good. However, I've promised myself I won't become one of those baseball pushy parents. He honestly just loves the game. I've always enjoyed going to see the Norwich Navigators and other (statewide) farm teams. Spend your family time there everyone ... it's truly lots of fun! And remember it's just a game ..." M., East Hampton

"The Yankees most definitely will have the best year ... I mean, they have the best (not to mention the cutest) shortstop in the entire league, so why wouldn't they? :)" Andrea S., North Haven

"Can you come up with some more interesting surveys soon? No offense to you guys (you're really great :) ) but these surveys are pointless!" T.M., Ashford
Editor's Note: We're open to suggestions. ;-)

"The "local" team with the best record this year will be the Westerners of the Collegiate Wooden Bat League in Danbury, CT. The only pro team I recognize is the Chicago Cubs ("Wait 'til next year!!")" R.L.H., New Milford

"I think that baseball is the most boring sport in the world. I would rather watch golf than baseball." C.W.T., Enfield

"I just figure the Mets can't do any worse than they usually do, so, they're having a pretty good year." E.S., Danbury

"YANKEES RULE!!! I LOVE DEREK JETER!! THEY RULE!!!" Sarah, Portland
Editor's Note: Don't hold back, Sarah. Tell us how you really feel. ;-)

"We think that the Yankees are the best team that ever came to pro baseball! We also hope that the Yankees go all the way this year, with the world series and all. We hope to see this soon on the comments page." CoolCat and PussyCat, Canterbury

"If it doesn't have 600 horsepower and four tires, is it a sport?" Tom Seiferman, Killingly

"Yanks all the way. The players are really gettin it together, like Tino, Bernie, and Jeter. They be hittin' it hard, and playin' some nice D, go Yanks!" J.B., Northford
