"You can't be for real!" was the comment of one writer regarding this week's survey question. Well, of course we are, somewhat. Blame the heat.
It seems most folks think it unlikely that Earthlings are the only sentient beings in the universe. The fact that more than 12 percent of respondents identify *themselves* as space aliens should tell us all a lot, but we're not gonna go there. ;-)
Those who are interested in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence may want to head over to Seti@Home, where you can download software that will allow your home PC to help out with analyzing SETI data in its spare time.
The results:
Q: Is there alien, intelligent life in the universe?
- Most likely, yes - 2,688 (61.2%)
- I doubt it - 681 (15.5%)
- I've met them! - 126 (2.8%)
- I'm an alien myself - 557 (12.7%)
- I hope so - 334 (7.6%)
Your comments this week:
"Yes, I think that there maybe aliens out there since there could be another solar system that is like ours. The only problem is that that solar system may have died out because of the distance from earth to wherever the other solar system is." C.Y., Fairfield
"Aliens are out there. But the human race is scared of what they don't understand, so we will attack aliens when they come. Then I don't know what will happen, but I bet it will be bad." M.A., Falls Village
"I recently finished an astronomy coarse in high school, and I never considered the universe to be so large. I refuse to believe that we are the only form of life." M.M., Putnam
"I sure hope so, because there is no intelligent life on this planet!" Vaughn, Darien
Editor's Note: Thanks, Vaughn. We knew somebody would say it. ;-)
"Aliens ... of course there are ... think about it. Every star we see has a galaxy with planets ... many probably like ours. I highly doubt all those planets have no life. There are probably planets that have life just like ours and are wonderng the same thing. Oh -- and congrats on the question -- I liked it a lot." J.B., Northford
"I do believe in life on other planets, but I do not believe in little green aliens with one giant eye connected by a long tube. There are so many different galaxies and so many undiscovered planets, stars, etc. that it only makes sense for there to be some type of life form somewhere in the universe." Jen L., Branford
"Genesis Chapter 6 could be an explanation for "aliens" and alien abductions. Check it out." D., Naugatuck
"No one can convince me that we are the only living beings in this universe. That concept is ludicrous. If one is to believe that we are the only humans existing, then you are not in control of your own existence." Dalriada, Colebrook
"I have always belived that if there is life on our planet, there has to be life out there soome where. We can't be the only plant that has life -- whatever shape or form it is." Gary, East Hartford
"n 1969,when my husband and I were still in our late teens, we were driving up the Winsted Road from Torrington to Winsted about 9:00 in the evening. Just outside the town where there weren't many homes our car started acting funny so we pulled over onto a dirt rest stop. We looked up in the sky over our heads and about 3,000 to 5,000 feet up was a craft, round in shape and from that height up it looked to be the size of a football field. There were lights all the way around the edge that were going from dull to bright in a strobe like pattern. We were terrified! We jumped into the car and drove off like a bat out of hell hoping they hadn't seen us. We never again saw anything like that again. We don't tell people about it because they wouldn't believe us anyway but we both remember it well and we don't drink or smoke." D.L.H., Torrington
"Aliens are just creatures of life. I believe in them." M.E.C., Watertown
"I think there is a possibility of life in the universe because no one has ever been to the other side of a black hole before, so we can't say that "aliens" don't exist." S.V., Waterbury
"Your survey question reminds me of an old "B.C." cartoon that is still on our refrigerator: "Q: Do you believe there is intelligent life out there? A: Yes. Q: How can you be so sure? A: They never come here." By the way, we are now on our tenth download for Seti@home. Who knows? Whether you believe in ET or not, this little program makes a mesmerizing screensaver - I recommend it." Phoebe Watson, Stamford
"There has to be intelligent life somewhere, intelligent life on earth has not been proven by actions of its inhabitants thus far, therefore it my conclusion that "intelligence" if not a misnomer, must be guiding the universe or we would not be in existence." M.M.M., Stafford Springs
"Here on this planet, you have a lot of war, crime, violance, and many other problems. War and violance are, in my opinion, two of the biggest, if not the biggest. That is really hindering humans' progress. In my opinion, the reason some aliens have the abilaty to travel to this planet is because they have learned to overcome or have never had some of the problems we have on Earth, and so were able to devote more time and resources to researching a way to reach out into very deep space. But, even if the aliens are not as advanced as we are (because most people's view of aliens is that they are more advanced) I am 100% sure that they are there." B.M.V., Branford
"The possibility of other intelligent life in the universe has little to do with faith or fancy. It is a scientific probability that life is supported on other planets, and that intelligent life can or has already evolved there. Though it is possible that we are alone, it is probably only a matter of time before earthlings, just like our own previously isolated tribes, are confronted with entirely foreign existences. When this happens, let us be wiser and kinder than we were with each other." Mike Costeines, Stratford
"Considering the fact that 1/8 of the survey voters say they are aliens, then I believe that either they are whacked on drugs or something; or possibly, there might be more aliens around us than we realize." Jon, Ridgefield
"Just wanted to thank SNET for coming up with these great questions for their surveys! It really breaks up the monotony of the business day. Yes, I too do believe, but have only seen them from afar." Bunny, Enfield
"This survey is stupid. All your surveys are stupid. This survey is especially stupid." D.R., Middletown
"The only intelligent life in the universe is GOD!!!!!!! And he was smart enough to make us and love us. But most of all, have his son die so we can live! Even though smarts has nothing to do with it, I wanted all of you to know the Truth." T.M., Ashford
"I sure hope there is another life form out there. I mean really: If there wasn't where the heck did people like Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky come from?!?!?! It blows my mind that people don't think that there's another lifeform." Sarah, Portland
