For everyone who uses the 'Net regularly, there was a hook that grabbed them and kept them online. For most folks, it's the lure of the web, and email, as the entirely unscientific results of this week's survey indicate.
For others, it's chat and instant messaging, shopping, gaming, or of course, "Other" ... the list could have been far longer. Usenet newsgroups would doubtless have garnered votes, as would streaming media, as would music and MP3s, as would free software ... it's hard to pick just one.
The results:
Q: What's your favorite part of the Internet?
- Browsing the Web - 1,353 (32.5%)
- Email!- 1,314 (31.6%)
- Instant Messages - 376 (9.0%)
- Chat - 398 (9.6%)
- Shopping - 180 (4.3%)
- Gaming - 179 (4.3%)
- Other - 355 (8.5%)
Your comments this week:
"I do like browsing but emailing to my family is great. I have family in Fla., S.C., Upstate N.Y. and California so it does save a lot of phone calls. It also enables us to talk and chat more. R.M., West Haven
"I love getting emails, especially from those who I can't contact through the phone. But I also love being able to chat with them. The Internet is just an awesome thing to have." S.K., Simsbury
"I love the Internet. I love email, chat, listening to computer news on the Net, everything about the Net. It's cool. You can watch movies on the Internet." H.B., Stratford
"How about NEWS?" Dewey, Pomfret Center
Editor's Note: We figured that fell under the general heading of browsing ...
"Games are the best part of the Internet --because they just are." S.S., West Hartford
"Your survey about "What is your favorite part of the Internet?" didn't include what I think is an obvious answer, NEWS. I clicked "other," because "news" was not included with the options. Now, I am probably going to be lumped in with the pornography stuff. In the future, when you ask a question along these lines, please include the option "News." P.S. I thing the BBC online is an awesome source." Tom V., Madison
"PORN is most definitely the best part of the Internet. Without PORN the Internet would be useless." J.M., Coventry
"The Internet is great! I look for jobs, schools, and any kind of information that I'm interested in, and I can talk to my friends who are long distance without racking up a large phone bill." S.C., Southington
"I think that shopping is what I do most on the Internet. Why? Because I have found that on the Internet you can find products that are in stores for less ... an example of this is when trying to buy Japanese animation in stores it costs around $20 and on the Internet, around $12. And it also makes price comparison shopping much easier." C.Y., Fairfield
"My favorite thing about the Internet is chatting because it gives me the chance to learn about different people and their cultures." J.Z., East Windsor
