Husky Expectations (The Women)

Most respondents to this week's SNET Internet survey are expecting as much from the 1999-2000 UConn women's basketball team as last week's respondents were of the men's team -- a plurality of more than 36 percent are expecting a national championship.

The results:

Q: What are your expectations for the UConn women's basketball team this season?

  • National Champs! - 1,355 (36%)
  • Final Four - 1,053 (28%)
  • Final Eight - 222 (6%)
  • Sweet Sixteen - 166 (4%)
  • Lucky to make NCAAs - 88 (2%)
  • Also-rans - 34 (1%)
  • I don't care - 872 (23%)

Your comments:

"As a fan of women in general, I can only hope those who cast "I don't care" votes understand the powerfully strong and valuable influence these young women provide to youth. If you don't care about the sport ... fine ... but be broad-based to see the positive, please." L.M., Cheshire

"I think the women's team has a better chance then last year because they will want to be equal to the guys. I wish them a TON of luck!" J.G., Storrs

"Connecticut fans have nothing better to do in this state than to follow the Huskies year round ... Where will these "losers" be when the Lady Huskies decline sometime in the future?" D.F.R., South Windham

"Husky-mania has hit SNET Internet Web Editor now too - it's an epidemic! Hopefully, you'll be "cured" by next Friday, and be able to focus on pertinent issues, related to the holidays; such as: like: Reducing Stress/Saving Money/Time Management/Favorite Recipes." D.N., Bloomfield

Editor's Note: We wanted to give the women's team equal time. Thanks for the suggestions; we'll try to work them in. :-)

"Wouldn't it be great if both UCONN teams won the NCAAs in 2000? Their fans would really go bonkers if it happened! Even those who won't believe or don't care might change their tune and join in the cheering. I think sports on any level improves the participants." SunnyDay, Brookfield

"Like the men's team ... I would like to know what classes they (players on the women's team) actually attend ... classes?"

"Taxpayer-funded collegiate athletics are way out of control. Stop the madness." Alex, Bristol

"Enough with the Huskies already. We're starting to sound like Penn State, where sports is the state religion. It'S A GAME, folks! A GAME." J., South Windsor

"Although I believe the womens' UConn team should be as good as any in the nation ...Getting to the Final Four is such a hard task ... I believe they should accomplish that ... All of what comes after that is frosting and my daughter and I will be there all the way to the end!" G.J.D., Naugatuck

"As to your survey, if 23% of those interviewed said "I don't care," I feel that they had better lighten up and look toward something that can elevate their spirit and make them feel proud to have something positive and uplifting associated with their state." M.R.D., East Hartford

"The Bird will make the Huskies fly." J.T. East Hartford

"This is for the 23 percent who don't care what happens to the UConn Lady hoopsters. Get the hell out of Connecticut ... you don't deserve to live here!" C.E., Bristol
