This week we decided to follow up the very well-received "Superman's Powers" survey with a more general one. It was a challenge keeping the list of superheroes to a manageable number, and we apologize to anyone whose favorite was left out. Superman managed a pretty solid win with Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man and The Tick receiving respectable quantities of votes. The Tick was far ahead at one point due to some fairly obvious ballot-box stuffing, which we negated.
To those of you asking about who The Tick was:
Who is The Tick?
The Tick is a powerful superhero. He broke out of the Evanston Hospital, an asylum in Minnesota, and became the self-proclaimed protector of The City. (THE TICK #1) According to The Tick Animated Series, he won the protectorship of The City at a superhero convention. (The Tick vs. The Idea Men)
Who created the Tick?
The Tick was created by Ben Edlund. Mr. Edlund, who is now in his late twenties, grew up in Massachusetts and created the Tick his senior year in school.
(Reprinted from The Tick FAQ.)
We figured The Tick would be fairly well-known from his 1994-1996 cartoon series on the Fox network and would make a good fun option for those of you who might not wish to vote for a serious superhero. Plus, there's the New England connection...

Your comments:
"When I was growing up, I always thought that Batman was the only logical choice. All the other superheroes were from other planets or dimensions, or they had some"gift" bestowed on them from a science experiment gone wrong. Batman gained all his powers from technology. Therefore, it was the human mind that enhanced his condition. I always thought that meant that if he could do it, anyone of us could better ourselves, even if we couldn't get our own Batmobile. In a way, Batman was the first cool computer geek. Gates has nothing on him!" R.K.A., New Britain
"Actually, my favorite comic book heros are Flatman and Ribbon, alias Batman and Robin. They can slide under doors, spy of criminals in their dastardly deeds, slither through crowds unnoticed and tie up the feet of the most notorious of criminals. Yes, my favorite comic book heros are Flatman and Ribbon." Ron, Colchester
"FAVORITE COMICS CHARACTER... DILBERT!!" E.G., Wallingford
"Just wondering if this survey is indicative of the age group of who answers surveys, and who uses snet internet! I, for one do not remember the Green Lantern!" Ralph, Naugatuck
"My favorite is from Marvel comics circa 1966-69, drawn and written by (who else) Stan Lee!" Jon, Glastonbury
Editor's note: not to be a stickler Jon- Stan Lee wrote those comics, but did not draw them. You are probably thinking of the great Jim Steranko.
"Interesting list of thirteen superheros, two of whom were women. Speaks volumes." K.M., Waterford
"Wonder Woman...no doubt! How can you not love her? She is beautiful, inteligent, has a super lasso, and is a chick. I think that is the best super hero ever created. Why have a man do the all the fun stuff when a woman can do it?" K.G.W., New Britain
"I like the Wonder Twin Powers! You remember the two twins (brother and sister) that formed into water, bulldozers, etc.?" M.P., Milford
"Well, Shazam!!!! No one bests Captain Marvel!" G.W., Bethany
"Re: the survey "who is your superhero?" Do you see an anomaly here??? Looks like someone has crammed the survey for the 'Tick'." M.J.C., No Town
Editor's note: We noticed that too- and removed the bogus Tick votes..close to 2,000 of them!
"Just imagine being able to zip in and out wherever and whenever you chose without being seen or heard. That would teach the relatives a few things." Andy, Prospect
"I can't believe you didn't list Green Arrow." J.W.H., New London
"The Tick? Come on people, does some whacko in a blue suit with a friend who thinks he's a moth really constitute a super hero? i know...Batman's got no super powers either but still..." C., Brooklyn
"Do another survey on the Superman powers to see what is the age of the people choosing invulnerability. I think this would be very interesting." S.S.H., No Town
"I would have to say that my favorite superhero is Tygra from Fox Network's Avengers." C.Y., Fairfield
"Who or what is"The Tick"? Is he for real or a put-on?" J.P.F., Milford
"How could anyone not choose The Tick? What's Superman got that makes him such a better pick? Oh, well...ok. There's the flight thing, and x-ray vision, that's pretty cool...oh, and super-intelligence, The Tick doesn't have that either... 'Arthur.. help!!'" John, Stamford
"I think The Tick is by far the worst"superhero". Not only is he not a classic, but he is a sad disgrace to American superheroes. I am shocked and repulsed that so many people voted for him. What powers does he have except for sucking blood? Please help our nation and its pathetic people. Please let us all in on the joke..." Jane, Litchfield
"I know technically he's not a comic book superhero...but how could you leave out the one, the only...SNOOPY. He's the only comic superhero I would want to save me!" G.G.B., Coventry
"It says you can write it your favorite cartoon superhero! Where do you write it in? Mine is Aquaman." J.W.P., Groton
"I think your survey should include not just superheroes, but comic book favorites, like Archie and other characters that might be included in the list of heroes." Me, Stepney
