This week featured another one of those "We were curious so we thought we'd ask" kind of SNET Internet survey questions. We were a little surprised at the number of people who say they have five or more credit cards, and not terribly surprised at the number who said they had none ... but to each, his or her own.
Q: How many credit cards do you have?
- 1 - 520 (16%)
- 2 - 558 (17%)
- 3 - 389 (12%)
- 4 - 289 (9%)
- 5 - 175 (5%)
- More than 5 - 693 (21%)
- I don't have one - 203 (6%)
- I don't want one - 113 (3%)
- I'm too young for one - 355 (11%)
Your comments:
I have always had one credit card. That is not to say that my balance is low & my credit is 100% perfect! (Not too bad). The funny thing is, I've owned the SAME credit card for hmm...23 years. It has gone thru good times and bad, from single person to married with children & home owner, has added a multitude of twists and turns in the highway of life. I think limiting yourself to ONE credit card gives a person a sense of some control in a world where the unforseable (and inevitable) CAN happen. Mostly it just scares the bejesus out of me to have more than one! (Correct spelling of bejesus please!) Mike, East Hampton
Credit cards can get you into BIG trouble!! We've had several and have gone through credit counseling to get back on track! NO WAY will we ever have more than 1 major card again! After having to pay cash for a long time, we feel we are disciplined enough to manage just ONE! We no longer are in that "have to have it NOW" mode! (thank goodness!!). If one of us does get that way, the other will talk the one into waiting until we can afford it. THROW THOSE OFFERS YOU GET IN THE MAIL AWAY!! Sue, Groton
About the credit cards: I used to have about 12, and ran up an immense debt. Now, I have one that I pay off every month. Credit cards can suck you into a vicious black hole that is extemely difficult to get out of. I still get offers for more cards, even though my credit rating is horrendous. T., Guilford
I've responded to several of these surveys. What in the world happens to them? Why are we responding? Do they serve a purpose? J.R., Avon

I Have seven if you count gas cards and atm cards. C.Y., Fairfield
I don't want any credit cards. I got divorced years ago, and my life was ruined by them and my ex-wife. I could probaly use one now with no problem, because I can handle my own budget. But after the nightmare that I went through, I suggest to anyone: "Buy it now, or admit that you can't afford it." Thanks for letting me vent. John, Uncasville
I'm too young for one and even if I was old enough, I'd only want one because there's no point in having five or six. All your bills just keep piling up and if you can't pay them, why have them? Me, Ballouville
