CD still rules as the favorite format for music, according to this week's SNET Internet survey -- though MP3s are gaining in popularity. We should note that the MP3 vote is perhaps artificially inflated by a bout of ballot stuffing early in the week.
We thought there would be a bigger purist/nostalgia vote for "Live" and/or "Vinyl," but it didn't materialize.
The results:
Q: What format do you prefer for music?
- MP3 - 1,296 (23%)
- CD - 3,180 (57%)
- Cassette - 305 (5%)
- 8 track - 96 (2%)
- Vinyl - 332 (6%)
- Live - 414 (7%)
Your comments:
"CD's are great, you can listen to songs withou the hassle of 'fast-forwarding' and you can burn cd's. You can get free MP3's and burn them ono a cd, what a great deal!" Jules, Storrs
"Anybody that likes cassettes is nuts and you forgot about Minidisc and super audio CD." No Name, Plainville
"Looking at your survey results to date, I am absolutely dumbfounded that people would actually prefer some computer download than a real live performance. I can remember when people got together to share a great performance from an artist. Now we hide at home in front of a monitor. This is Progress?" C.W.P., Ledyard
"MP3??? 36% and I have no idea what it is. Please explain." Barb, Watertown
Editor's note: Barb, head over to www.mp3.com for an explanation. ;-)
"I own a dance record label in Bridgeport and 75% of my sales are in vinyl,15% in cassettes, and 10% in CD's." J.D., Bridgeport
"Umm, what are those things? I know cds, cassette, mp3s and live, but what are the other two?" Julia, Willington
"Just can't help missing vinyl - better album covers, didn't scratch nearly as easily and singles were a single dollar, not $5. I acknowledge the music quality, but I truly miss the vinyl sound." A.A., New London
"I mostly listen to Christian music now. It comes in all styles (upbeat, solemn, even rap!), I can understand the words, and those words have something enlightening & valuable to teach me." No Name, Naugatuck
"CDs have a great & clear sound." No Name, Stratford
"CDs tend to cut off the high and low of the music and you don't get the same sound as vinyl." G.L., Guilford
"CD IS MY FIRST CHOICE, BUT IN ORDER TO HAVE CD YOU MUST HAVE MP3 (2nd CHOICE). OH HOW I LOVE MY CD BURNER!" Tom, New London
"My favorite music format is MiniDisc, it by far passes out the flexibility, recording performance, and ease of use than any of the formats you listed. Their is no other media like it, except for maybe a hard disk recorder, and the Sony player that i have (the Sony mze55) is smaller than any of the mp3 players i have seen..." Viper, Branford
