What do people use the Internet for? We deliberately chose very broad categories when crafting this week's survey. The most popular answer, "research," probably covers a lot of activity.

We were a little surprised at the 20 percent who said they use the Internet to waste time ... but that's just us. We don't count anytime spent online as entirely wasted. ;-)

The results:

Q: Among the following choices, I use the World Wide Web most for:

  • Research - 1,530 (43%)
  • Socializing - 425 (12%)
  • Shopping - 197 (6%)
  • Casual reading - 216 (6%)
  • Playing games - 246 (7%)
  • Downloading files - 223 (6%)
  • Wasting time - 691 (20%)

Your comments:

"I use the internet most for news and/or weather (that might be considered the same thing). I chose "casual reading", thinking that might be closest to it." Tom, Guilford

"I wonder how many people would have said they use the internet for working had the choice been available. I chose nothing because I use it for working most of the time." Sesran, Naugatuck

"Why didn't you include business?" C.B., Oxford
