When we picked this week's SNET Internet survey question, we didn't know that U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman was going to be Al Gore's choice for vice presidential candidate. When Lieberman was selected a few days later, we looked at the question and decided to leave it up as it was.
It was interesting to watch the percentage of people who thought that Gore made a good choice rise during the course of the week. Either our respondents were warming to the selection, or they were jumping on the bandwagon.
The results:
Q: Do you think Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman should be Al Gore's running mate?
- Sure, he's a great choice - 2,967 (44%)
- Gore can do better - 605 (9%)
- No, we need him in the Senate - 939 (14%)
- The Republicans will win anyway - 1,763 (26%)
- Who? - 522 (8%)
Your comments:
"I used to be a McCain Republican. After Al Gore's selection of Sen. Joe Lieberman as his running mate I view his decisionmaking skills differently. I will be changing my party tomorrow so that I can vote for the informative ticket." M.L.C., Norwich
"I think he brings a high standard of morals to the ticket. He's a good man. We should be proud of our Senator." G.G., North Stonington
"Mr. Lieberman is just another politician getting rich off the backs of the working class. I am quite sure the State of Connecticut overpays him enough to party and pass laws that suit himself as well as the rest of the self serving rich in this state. Why he should need more money by getting a Capitol Hill job is beyond me. Some people are just greedy." A., Colchester
"Sad to say, but I think President Clinton has foiled any chance Al Gore has for the presidency. Any one who was VP under him would have that problem. I feel he would make a better president than Mr. Bush. He seems to be honest, loyal and down to earth. We need Joe in CT. He deserves a shot, but I'd hate for him to go this year with the situation as it now stands. Time will tell." D.S.M., Colchester
"Lieberman is too liberal, and too wishy-washy. He speaks with no emotion and appears weak." M.K., Stratford
"Lieberman has been such a disappointment to anyone who believes in the Constitution of The United States, that it's enough to make you sick. Liberal Democrats (An Oxymoron) in politics have no place to be." P.B.M., Lime Rock
"As a registered Republican, I would hope that, as liberal as Mr. Lieberman is, he won't align himself to the folly that is the legacy that is the Clinton administration. That would be smart politics on his part. However, a return to "responsible" government is needed, not more of the selling of the White House for political gain. Or worse yet, to destroy the Bill of Rights for the general masses just for the chosen few. But politics as it is, only time will tell." G.M.K., Waterbury
"Responses using such choices as "No Opinion" or "Who?" just continue to be amazing to me. Is this attributable to isolationism or intelligence?" J.T., Shelton
"Anyone he chooses I'm sure will be so extremely leftist that really turns our stomachs. This country used to reward effort, now it's just going down the toilet with our government and do-gooders leading the way to a communistic society." R.W.K., Monroe
"I believe that Joe Lieberman would be a great vice president. He couldn't do any worse than the others before him. Perhaps a whole lot better." B.P., Meriden
"If Bush gets in he will be like his father. No good when we had the Gulf War. Why did he stop? He should had gone all the way. That's why Idont like him, a chip of the old block." C.J.B., Hartford
"Lieberman is a good, respected senator, but Gore is a loser (he's a waffler and I don't think he is honest) so Lieberman should take a pass and not hitch his star to Gore's." Susan, Avon
"The real travesty and deception is that the DNC vice chairman makes an outrageous, bigoted anti-semitic statement referring to the Senator and no media reports on it." D.A., Mansfield
"Poor Al Gore has to survive Bill Clinton. There doesn't seem to be much hope. America is demonstrating a long memory." M.A.V., East Hartford
"Personally, I feel we really don't have anyone to vote for. They both have their own personal gains in mind, not the American people. Gore still looks like he has a broom stuck somewhere. Bush? Forget it." K.A.W., Old Lyme
"Yes, because he's honest and says it like it is! I believe if Bush is elected, his father will in reality run the country. That's my opinion." J.P., Wallingford
"Fidel Castro recently said both Gore and Bush are insipid politicians who will make no difference in the US and world. He's right. Lieberman cannot make Gore better or worse, since despite historical public angst over important issues, he ends up supporting insipid middle, mainstream policies in the end. He's a horse from the Gore-Bush farm. Vote for Nader!" A.B., No Town
"We need Lieberman in the Senate otherwise the damn Giordana that no one likes will win for senate!" M.C., Waterbury
"No, I feel that the Senator should continue to be our man in the Senate. If he wants to run for the executive office, he should wait and run for President or until a canadate other than Gore be nominated. I am a Democrat and love senator Lieberman however I will not cast my vote for Gore, I do not trust him to lead our nation." B.J.P., Middletown
"It seems like the top weak presidential hopefuls will be bolstered by their respective VPs who have a great deal more respect than the presidential candidates." T.R.Y.G., Trumbull
"I believe he has basically sold out his own beliefs for the good of the Democrats. I have voted Independent for many years, and for both parties, this was a real surprise." W.A.Z., Groton
"I think Lieberman is a decent guy but he is still a politician.Yes, he did speak out against Clinton concerning the Monica affair but when all was said and done, look the way he voted. If he really meant anything by his words, he would have voted to impeach. I don't care about Clinton's sex episodes, but he lied under oath. Do people realize how Monica would have been driven into the ground if there wasn't a stained dress. It would have been another example of how power and money can drive ordinary citizens down. Gore stood right next to Clinton in support. Gore has no credibility and Lieberman is being used in an attempt to get it." R.A.M., Bridgeport
"I think that our great President Clinton ruined it for his party ... it doesn't matter how good Gore and his running mate are ... Clinton blew it!" P.T., New Milford
"Shame on you Joe for changing your position on social security and school choice. Remember, you have to answer to God for your transgressions." R.M., Canaan
"No, he could run with someone else that would complement his ideals much better. Gore isn't a type of person I can trust." G.L.C., Bristol
"I believe that Gore made an excellent choice in Lieberman; however, Lieberman picked a bad time to be a Vice Presidential candidate in that he will be automatically associated with all the half-truths and the cover ups that have happened at the White House while Clinton was in office and Gore was Vice President. Lieberman should not be associated with Gore; he should have waited for a better president candidate. It will be very difficult for me to vote for Gore since I have no faith in him and see him as a puppet rather than a leader." M.C.P., South Windsor
"I am excited about this race. Now that we know who is running for both parties we can make some informed decisions. The VP role is very important. We tend to look at this position as second class, but he could end up as our president. I trust Lieberman and do not trust Cheney." D.M., Colchester
"Happy to see him go! He is only going to vote or say what they want him to. He has no backbone to stand up for what he truly believes in. He will prove me right when he talks about education and how he is not for vouchers anymore." John, Old Saybrook
"Edit spelling if you must, because I use your services, don't give me that junk about we don't use real names, or you do not know where this response is cominig from. I can tell you this much- Get rid of SURVEY, it sucks. Give us something good at the end of each hard working day. After work, I don't expect to come home and do your work. (survey) You may think something is coming out of all of this survey crap, but I can tell you this Old Hat!!
