Only about a third of the respondents to this week's SNET Internet survey said they would "absolutely" watch the presidential debates this year.

But only 12 percent called them "a waste of time," which indicates to us that people will be paying attention, one way or the other.

The results.

Q: Assuming there are presidential debates, will you watch them?

  • Absolutely - 1,203 (31%)
  • Maybe - 994 (26%)
  • No...Bor-ing - 703 (18%)
  • They're a waste of time - 446 (12%)
  • No need, my mind's made up - 495 (13%)

Your comments:

"The debates are worthless. It is like a beauty contest or a debating match. Governance depends on a lot more than a quick answer. Delegating responsibilities to competent people is very important. That is where character counts and sets a tone for the administration." J.R., New London

"Any time these guys get together for a debate you can't tell what is the truth and what is B.S.; Besides the fact that they probably have a whole room full of people to think up questions and answers to every possible question that could come up. So my survey answer should not be boring but totally a waste of time." L.M.C., Torrington

"Why would you want to watch presidential debates? Talk about boring. I think reading a good book is a lot more enjoyable. All the issues will still be there and unresolved in the end." Mel, Windsor Locks

"The debates in my opinion are a sure-fire way to tell if the candidate is capable of handling stress. Their performance while not totally convincing adds to the decision making process!" R.G., Southington

"Why bother to watch when only the two "major" parties will be invited? And they are basically the same philosophically. I would watch if they included the Libertarian Party." R.W.L., Windsor

"Absolutely. I will watch the first debate." R.R., Dayville

"Ralph Nader should be included in the presidential debates." D.M., Stratford

"Without including candidates like Ralph Nader, the two party debates don't focus on needed issues. The major parties agree to sidestep the tough ones and the people have scripted and censored issue coverage. Smile for the camera!" L.J.T., Winchester

"Hey -- why would I want to watch the debates? I am 14 and they would be of no interest. I also would like to know why they can't lie, they won't get reelected, but they have 4 years of control and they can do what they want, right? (To some point at least.)"
Jules, Storrs
