The Game. For better and/or for worse, it's the biggest annual spectacle in the country; and some people take it more seriously than a disputed presidential election, for goshsakes.

We apparently should have included the answer "I watch because I love football." Perhaps it was just too obvious. In any case, we dropped the ball.

Q: Did you watch the Super Bowl and why?

  • Yes, for the party - 537 (9%)
  • Yes, to root for the Giants - 1,868 (31%)
  • Yes, to root for the Ravens - 466 (8%)
  • Yes, for the cool ads - 670 (11%)
  • Yes, for the halftime show - 298 (5%)
  • No, because it's boring - 325 (5%)
  • No, because it's stupid - 242 (4%)
  • No, I have better things to do - 1,610 (27%)

Your comments:

"The halftime spectacle is too long and should be cut back. Delaying the game is not what Super Bowl Sunday is all about!" Dan, North Haven

"I was eager to respond to your Super Bowl survey, but was surprised to see you hadn't thought of what's (to me) the best reason to watch. It isn't for a party, or to root on either the Giants or the Ravens, and it's certainly not to watch the commercials (we'll see them over and over for months to come). I'm watching the Super Bowl for the same reason I watch football all season long -- I just enjoy the game!" Jim, Milford

"How about a simple 'Yes, I enjoy football'? In many ways, like so many times, your survey misses the point." J.P., Milford

"I'm watching the Super Bowl because i'm a fan of the sport of football. Shouldn't this be the #1 reason? You should have included this option in your survey." S.B., Orange

"I only watched this year for halftime." Lisa, Ansonia

"I watch the Super Bowl because it's football. The last game of the season, if I might add. I find your survey to be offensive not to include 'just to watch the game'. I would also like to add that I really don't care for your surveys because, they are to narrow of the choices to chose from. Especially in this case." W.W., Torrington

"I picked yes and to root for the Ravens, but You really didn't have my reason. I watched it because I love football. I picked the Ravens because I like their defense, and everyone else was rooting for the Giants ( I don't like any New York team). I watch for the football every year!" L.J.N., East Haddam

"Sports are played for money and politics are used -- they are not sports -- insane waste of time! Spectators go insane over what team carries the ball to the goal -- the ultimate sport is the royal art of self control where you have no competitors but your self. It seems easy, but it is not easy. It is the fight for your life -- the greatest battle one will ever encounter-to control temper, emotions, sex desires and all others that are offshoots -- desires for fame, money and power-empty bubbles that fade away and only character remains after that incarnation!" Louis, Bantam

"I watch the Super Bowl because I like football. I am a wife who watches football, regardless of who is playing, I love football!" Donna, Madison
