Breast Cancer, MS and Leukemia In response to "Breast Cancer: The Silent Killer" (10/16/98) In addition to personal stories, readers sent the following information about support organizations for victims of breast cancer and other illnesses: Buy "Fund the Cure" stamps "When next you pass or go into a U.S. post office, remember that the U.S. Postal Service recently released its new "Fund the Cure" stamp to help fund breast cancer research. It is important that we contribute what we can to cure this disease that kills and disfigures so many of our mothers, sisters and friends. It is also important that we enhance public awareness to keep women vigilant of this potential deadly harm. Instead of the normal $.32 for a stamp, this one costs $.40. The additional $.08 will go to breast cancer research. If all stamps are sold, an additional $16,000,000 will have been raised for vital, life-giving research. "Just as important as the money is our support. Just imagine what caring we will convey if the stamp outsells the lottery this week or outsells tickets to the latest blockbuster movie this weekend. "A "regular" book of stamps costs $6.40. A Fund the Cure book costs $8.00. It takes two minutes in line at the post office and means so much. Many of us know others who are affected by nreast cancer. Please help." --- Connecticut Breast Cancer Support Groups:
Breast Cancer Information Resource http://www.fight-breastcancer.com/ Multiple Sclerosis Network I have read several of your articles and have enjoyed learning about organizations set up for people with disabilities. Several years ago, a support network was set up for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and their friends and families. The founder, from Naugatuck, CT, created a chatroom on the Internet where people can discuss problems associated with MS with others who understand. For more information, send email questions to: m.s.support@snet.net --- Support Leukemia Research and Patient Care "The Central Connecticut chapter of the Leukemia Society of America is located in Hamden, CT. We provide financial aid to patients and their families, support groups, and a new program called First Connection for newly diagnosed patient who would like to contact other patients and families who have already gone trough diagnosis and treatment. "In addition, we have a program called Team-in-Training, through which we recruit people who would like to run or walk a marathon (26.2 miles) or cycle a century (100 miles.) We provide expert coaches, training schedules, round trip airfare and hotel accommodations to the event they choose. The most important part is the honor of participating for a very special leukemia patient. "The Team-in-Training program started 10 years ago and the first team raised about $300,000. This past fiscal year, ending in June, 1998, we raised over $46 million, money that will support leukemia research and patient service programs. Leukemia is the #1 disease killer of children, yet strikes ten times as many adults." Mammograms are so important. I volunteer now for the American Cancer Society so that I can contribute to helping women and men fight this disease. Early detection saves your live and the quality of your life.I am so glad you are using this forum to spread the message." --- Please send questions or comments to bbruno@snet.net.
